Inspection basis

What duty holders need to know.

Lifting beams, spreader beams and frames are load-bearing accessories whose condition and configuration directly affect load stability. Structural damage, altered lifting points or incorrect assembly can invalidate the original capacity basis.

Each beam should be uniquely identified, marked with its safe working load and used only in the configuration covered by its design information. Repairs or alterations should be documented before re-examination.

How often is a spreader beam examined?
As a lifting accessory it is normally thoroughly examined at least every six months, unless a competent-person scheme specifies another interval.
Can an adjustable beam have one capacity?
Capacity may vary by configuration. The permitted setups and ratings must be clear and match the way the beam is assembled and used.
What if the beam has been repaired?
Repair information should be made available and a thorough examination may be required before the beam returns to service. Additional testing may be specified where justified.
